Jingletown

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jingletown is part of Fruitvale , a neighborhood in Oakland in the US state of California . The area borders the Oakland Estuary .

history

The name Jingletown originally comes from a habit of workers, mostly men of Portuguese and Azorean descent, who settled here between 1910 and 1920 and jingled with the coins of a weekly wage in their pockets, either to show off their wealth or to jingle also carried the money with them because they did not know or did not trust banking. In 1998, the area became home to an award-winning, affordable construction project that helped revitalize the community. In 2003, a “ construction boom ” began, with several local entrepreneurs building hundreds of condos , warehouses and homes on Estuary Beach. Nevertheless, the area remained a workers 'and artists' quarter, whose residents live and work in converted warehouses. Jingletown is also home to the Institute of Mosaic Art, and numerous buildings have mosaics on the facade.

Others

In 2005 a video from the American punk band Green Day , which was part of the album American Idiot and set in Jingletown, was released. The name of the song is Jesus of Suburbia . It's about a young punk who wants to get out of this "shit heap" , as the text says, and into the city to start a new life there. The video shows in detail the circumstances of his life. There is a 9:30 minute version with music only and a 12 minute version with dialogue and plot.
