The Jirau Dam (Usina Hidrelétrica Jirau) is a dam with a hydroelectric power plant on the Rio Madeira in the Brazilian state of Rondônia .

project

The dam is part of a complex of four planned hydropower plants on the Madeira River. This consists of two dams in Brazil (the Santo Antônio dam with 3580 MW near the city of Porto Velho and Jirau with 3750 MW about 100 km upstream), a third on the border between Brazil and Bolivia , and a fourth in Bolivia. The two in Brazil, Santo Antonio and Jirau, have already been completed, while the smaller ones upstream are still in the planning phase. Due to the power outages in Brazil from 2001 to 2002, construction was accelerated in 2009, Santo Antonio went into operation in 2012 and Jirau in 2013. The costs for both are estimated at 15.6 billion US dollars, of which 8 billion for Jirau, including 10 Billion for the structures and 5 billion for the locks , transmission lines and compensatory environmental measures.

Building

The Jirau dam will be a combination of a rubble dam with concrete sections for the power plant and flood relief . The length of the entire dam is 1,100 m, with the bulk dam being 800 m. The curved dam will be 63 m high and contains an asphalt concrete core. Its construction volume is 2,000,000 m³, of which 17,000 m³ is asphalt. The flood relief will get 21 openings and cope with a maximum discharge of 82,000 m³ / s. The hydropower plant will receive 50 75 MW Kaplan bulb turbines for a total installed capacity of 3,750 MW. The accumulated by the dam reservoir will have a surface area of 258 square kilometers, of which 135 square kilometers the original riverbed. Kaplan bulb turbines are similar to Kaplan turbines , except that they are installed horizontally so that power diversion and efficiency are better. The energy can be obtained from the hydraulic drop of 15.1 m and from the kinetic energy of the incoming water. The hydropower plant is being built by the French GDF Suez SA and the Brazilian Camargo Corrêa SA. The turbines went into operation between 2012 and 2016.

In March 2011, construction work was halted by workers' uprisings.
