Jiří Patera (born October 1936 ) is a Czechoslovak-Canadian mathematical physicist and mathematician. He is Professor (Professeur titulaire) at the University of Montreal (Center des recherches mathématiques, CRM).

Patera received her doctorate from Charles University in Prague in 1964 and came to Montreal in 1965.

He dealt with group theory , especially Lie groups , with applications in physics. Later he also dealt with applications in cryptography , image processing and random number generators and especially, partly in cooperation with Robert Moody , with quasicrystals .

Patera is known for his work on constructive calculation, right up to the concrete software implementation , of representations of Lie groups, about which he also wrote a book with tables of the branching rules that occur when splitting representations of a Lie group when considering the representations of its subgroups, published. These tables have applications in the study of GUTs in elementary particle physics . In GUTs, a superordinate, unifying group is broken down into its subgroups in the event of symmetry breaks and the representations of the group to which the elementary particles correspond are also broken down accordingly.

He also worked with Hans Zassenhaus and Robert Moody.

In 2004 he received the CAP / CRM Award in Theoretical Physics from the Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP).
