Pavel Winternitz

Pavel Winternitz (born July 1936 ) is a Czechoslovak-Canadian mathematical physicist. He is a professor at the University of Montreal (Center des recherches mathématiques, CRM).

Life

Winternitz grew up in Prague and studied there and in Leningrad . In 1966 he received his doctorate at the United Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna under Jakow Abramowitsch Smorodinski . At that time he was working on the application of the Lorentz group's representation theory to the calculation of relativistic scattering amplitudes in elementary particle physics. After the events of the Prague Spring in 1968 he went to Great Britain and the USA and finally to Canada in 1972 , where he received a full professorship in Montreal in 1984 .

Winternitz deals with applications of group theory (especially Lie groups) in theoretical physics and on nonlinear partial differential equations and systems of differential equations that can be precisely integrated (the integrability is usually ensured here by the existence of often hidden group-theoretical symmetries). In the 1990s, he also applied group theory classification to difference equations.

He also worked with Hans Zassenhaus on a book on the subgroup structure in the physics of important Lie groups ( Maximal Abelian Subalgebras of the Classical Algebras and Their Physical Applications ).

In 2001 he received the Theoretical Physics Prize from the Dubna Nuclear Research Center. In 2002 he received the CAP / CRM Prize in Theoretical Physics from the Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP). For 2018 Winternitz was awarded the Wigner Medal of the Group Theory and Fundamental Physics Foundation .
