Bute Estate Office (2013)

The Bute Estate Office , also known as Stuart Town House , is a former administration building in the town of Rothesay , the capital of the Scottish island of Bute . The building is in the city center across from the ruins of Rothesay Castle . In 1971 the Bute Estate Office was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.

history

The building was erected in the late 17th century at the behest of the Marquess of Bute . Due to a date on a gable stone, completion in 1681 appears likely. It served as the administrative building of the marquess in the city. It was used as a customs house in 1825 and it was renovated in the late 20th century. In 2010 the Bute Estate Office was added to the register of endangered listed buildings in Scotland. However, its condition was reported as solid and the degree of endangerment as low. The vacancy rate since 2009 is given as the main reason for a possible deterioration in the building fabric.

description

The elongated, three-story Bute Estate Office has a converted attic. Along the front there are numerous lattice windows with sandstone walls only approximately in vertical axes. The projecting entrance and stair tower is decorated with a stepped gable . The facades are traditionally plastered with Harl and whitewashed. The building ends with a slate-covered gable roof , which is worked as a stepped gable on both sides. On the right there is a two-story, short extension. The two-winged gate and the lattice windows are also set off there with frames made of polished sandstone. This wing also has a gable roof covered with gray slate.
