João Aguiar Machado

João Aguiar Machado (born January 16, 1959 in Ponta Delgada ) is a Portuguese EU official. He has been Special Advisor to the Directorate General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries since 2019 , which he headed from 2015 to 2019 as Director General. Prior to that, he was Director General of the European Union's Directorate General for Mobility and Transport since 2014 .

João Aguar Machado studied economics at the Instituto Superior de Economia, Lisbon, from 1978, with a master’s degree in 1983 and then until 1984 at the College of Europe in Bruges.

After working for six months at the International Monetary Fund, he joined the European Commission in 1986. There he went through a multi-stage career in the Directorates General for Trade and External Relations. He worked on trade issues in the EU representations in Japan from 1989 to 1994 and then at the World Trade Organization in Geneva until 1999.

In May 2014 he was appointed Director General of the Directorate General for Mobility and Transport.
