João Infante

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

João Infante or Lopo Infante was a Portuguese explorer who toured the coast of the African continent in the 15th century . In the years 1487–1488 he took part in the adventure of Bartolomeu Dias as captain of a ship called São Pantaleão (after Saint Pantaleon ) and sailed around the Cape of Good Hope with Dias during this expedition .

In Damião de Gois (1502-1574) says the Chronica d'el Rei D. Manuel ( chronicles of King Manuel ) about him:

“O piloto desta armada se chama Pero de Alenquer, homem mui esperto nas cousas do mar, e por cuja indústria Lopo Infante e Bartolomeu Dias chegaram ao rio Infante. / eng. The pilot of this fleet is called Pêro de Alenquer , a very clever man in sea matters, and through whose knowledge Lopo Infante and Bartolomeu Dias reached the river Infante. "

His father, Nuno Tristão, was already a seafarer under Prince Henry of Portugal . It is said that he was briefly banned from Portugal twice because of his violent temper. He was married and had a son named Nuno Infante.

Some places in South Africa are named after him or were named by him:

The Rio do Infante ( River Infante ), now the Great Fish River , Eastern Cape
Cape Infanta ( Kap Infante ), Western Cape
Infanta , Western Cape: a small settlement.
