Joëlle Pineau (* 1974 in Ottawa ) is a Canadian computer scientist . She is an Associate Professor at McGill University in Montreal , where she also heads Facebook's Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (FAIR).

Pineau earned a Bachelor of Systems Design Engineering degree from the Faculty of Engineering at Waterloo University in 1998. She did her Masters at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. A chapter of the thesis, Point-based value iteration: An anytime algorithm for POMDPs , was published and cited hundreds of times. In 2004 she got a doctorate in robotics there, at that time the only university where something like this was offered. She was looked after by Geoff Gordon and Sebastian Thrun .
