Joachim Bottieau (born March 20, 1989 in Boussu ) is a former Belgian judoka . He won two bronze medals at European championships.

Athletic career

The 1.80 m tall Joachim Bottieau started in the lightweight, the weight class up to 73 kilograms. In 2007 and 2008 he won a bronze medal at the European Junior Championships. In 2009 he won bronze medals at the Universiade and the U23 European Championships.

In 2010 he switched to light middleweight, the weight class up to 81 kilograms, after he had been Belgian champion in this weight class in 2009. In November 2010 he won a bronze medal at the U23 European Championships. In 2011 Bottieau won a World Cup tournament for the first time in São Paulo. At the 2012 European Championships in Chelyabinsk, he lost to the Russian Siraschudin Magomedow in the quarterfinals . With victories over the Swede Robin Pacek and the German Alexander Wieczerzak, Bottieau won a bronze medal. At the 2012 Olympic Games in London he was eliminated in the round of 16 against the Russian Ivan Nifontov . In November 2012 he won his second Belgian championship title.

In 2013 at the European Championships in Budapest Bottieau was defeated in the semifinals by Georgian Awtandil Tschrikishvili , in the battle for bronze he defeated the second Georgian Levan Tsiklauri . At the 2013 World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Bottieau was defeated by Ivan Nifontov in the quarterfinals and finished in seventh place. In 2014 and 2015 Bottieau failed early at the European and World Championships. In both years he won the Belgian middleweight championships. In 2016 Bottieau finished seventh at the European Championships in Kazan . At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, he lost to the Italian Matteo Marconcini in his opening fight . In 2018 he won his fifth Belgian championship title, now finally starting in the weight class up to 90 kilograms. In summer 2019 he ended his international career after various injuries.
