Joachim Kupke (born May 21, 1947 in Sindelfingen ) is a German painter and graphic artist . Since the 1970s, Kupke has also been active as a musician, lyricist and composer for the band “If you wanted to”.

Life

Joachim Kupke attended the AL Merz Werkkunstschule in Stuttgart from 1965 to 1967 . From 1967 to 1972 he studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart with Rudolf Haegele .

The course was followed by a longer study visit to the USA. It was there that photographs were taken that show people in everyday situations and at the same time were material for later work, according to Columbus / Ohio (1971).

Working as a freelance painter and graphic artist since 1972, Kupke became a member of the Baden-Württemberg Artists' Association in 1980. During this time, cartoons emerged that u. a. in Playboy, Il Mago, the Stuttgarter Zeitung and Pardon were published. In 1977 his first cartoon gang appeared horror sapiens . Drawings and oil paintings that deal with painting and art in an unusual way, such as Landscape with Tightrope (1979/1980) , also date from this period .

After a series of solo and group exhibitions, Kupke received a scholarship from the Baden-Württemberg Art Foundation in 1981. In 1986 a scholarship from the city of Sindelfingen followed.

Joachim Kupke has been married since 1995.

reception

In the beginning, Joachim Kupke's works were close to photorealism, with a tendency towards bizarre motif combinations that seem surreal, but already carry the artist's fundamental question about the original and its questioning in modern art of the 20th century. "(….) For Joachim Kupke, the paradox of reproduction and original is part of life and art, and at the same time it drives a playful exploration of originality."
