Joachim von Hirtenberg-Pastorius (born September 20, 1611 , † December 26, 1681 ) was a physician, historian, philosopher and poet.

Life

Joachim von Hirtenberg-Pastorius studied medicine and completed his studies with a doctorate. One of his first great works was “Florus Polonicus” (Leyden and Danzig, 1st edition 1641, 2nd edition 1642). Subsequently he also published texts on philosophy and Latin poetry. By dedicating his works to higher personalities, he attracted attention. After a job as a city ​​physician in Elbing, he held the post of professor of history at the local high school in 1651. During this time, further publications followed. In 1654, after he converted to Protestantism (inauguration on January 28, 1655) , he was appointed professor of history by the City Council of Danzig . In 1656 he was awarded the title of “Historicus Regius” and in 1662, due to his services to Polish historiography, he was awarded the Polish nobility indigenous with the title “von Hirtenberg”. In 1665 he was appointed "Secretarius Regius" before he finally left the Danzig grammar school in 1667. Towards the end of his life he converted back to Catholicism , which made the office of canon in Frauenburg open to him. His two-volume work on the history of Poland has survived from this period (part 1 1680, part 2 posthumously 1685). After his death on December 26, 1681, a memorial stone was erected for him in Frombork Cathedral.
