Joan de Munchensi

Joan de Munchensi, Countess of Pembroke (* before 1234, † 1307 ) was an English noblewoman who became one of the heiresses of the Marshal family.

Joan de Munchensi was the only surviving child from the marriage of Warin de Munchensi , Lord of Swanscombe in Kent , and Joan Marshal, daughter of William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke and Isabel de Clare, 4th Countess of Pembroke . After the death of her mother, who died before 1234, she was raised by her stepmother, Dionisie de Munchensi . After her mother's brothers all died childless by 1245, Joan became a co-heir of her grandfather's extensive estates, William Marshal. King Henry III she married after 1247 with his half-brother William de Valence , who thus became the heir of Pembroke Castle and other estates in the Welsh Marches and Ireland, including Wexford , and was finally raised to Earl of Pembroke .

Since their eldest son, William, died in the Battle of Llandeilo Fawr in 1282 , their younger son, Aymer, became their heir. After his childless death, the inheritance was divided between the descendants of their daughters.
