Joanne Calderwood (born December 23, 1986 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish muay thai master and professional MMA fighter. She currently ranks fourth in the “Unified Women's MMA Rankings” in terms of straw weight (up to 52 kg).

Life

Calderwood started her muay thai career by accident. At the age of 13, she jumped in for a friend of her brother's and accompanied him to Muay Thai training, which ultimately developed a passion for which she ended her career as a competitive swimmer. After a short time she was training not just two days a week, but twice a day. During this time, she worked after high school to get socially involved. After a while she changed the training camp and devoted herself entirely to martial arts.

Muay thai

Calderwood started with Muay Thai in 2000 and became "STBA Fighter of the Year" in 2009. She is the current ISKA World Champion, IKF European Champion, WKL European Champion and WBC - UK Champion; each in flyweight . At the World Professional Muay Thai Federation she is ranked 2.

Mixed martial arts career

Joanne Calderwood was Scotland's first professional MMA fighter. She won her first professional fight against Noellie Molina by technical knockout in the first round.

Then she fought in the third event of the "India's Super Fight Leagues" against Lena Ovchynnikova and won by a unanimous referee decision on points.

Their next fight took place under the banner of "On Top 5". There she defeated Ainara Mota by technical knockout and improved her MMA record to 3-0.

Most recently she fought on October 6, 2012 for the newly founded organization Invicta Fighting Championships , where she defeated Ashley Cummins spectacularly by knocking one knee to the body of her opponent in a Muay Thai clinch . This victory was rated as the "KO of the evening".

At the "InvictaFC 4", an event of the Invicta Fighting Championships on January 5, 2013, she fought against the Austrian Livia von Plettenberg. Calderwood won by a unanimous decision of the jury.

In early April 2013, it was announced that Calderwood had signed a six-fight contract with Invicta Fighting Championships.

Also in her 6th MMA fight on April 13, 2013 against the American Sally Krumdiack in Glasgow , Scotland, she remained undefeated. Already in the first round, Calderwood was able to win the fight by breaking off the referee after a kick and subsequent blows.

Calderwood was supposed to play against the Brazilian Claudia Gadelha at Invicta FC 6 on July 13, 2013 in Kansas City (Missouri) , USA . At the beginning of June, InvictaFC announced a change. Gadelha will now replace Carla Esparza, who lost due to injury. The new opponent for Calderwood should be the American Sarah Schneider. Due to a training injury, however, this had to be canceled. For this, Norma Rueda Center (USA) was signed as an opponent. Joanne Calderwood won the fight by a unanimous decision of the judges.
