Jocoro is a municipality in the Morazán department in El Salvador , the center of which is the city of the same name. It is located at an altitude of 278 m and 130 km east of the Salvadoran capital San Salvador . The community has an area of 73.2 km² and is divided into 8 cantons with a total of 10,060 inhabitants.
history
Many of the inhabitants of Jocoro are descended from the indigenous people of the area, the Ulúa. At the beginning of the Spanish colonial era, around 300 people lived in Jocoro. In 1770 the settlement was known as San Felipe Jocoro and belonged to the parish of Ereguayquín . In 1858 Jocoro was incorporated into San Francisco Gotera and in 1871 Jocoro achieved the rank of Villa . Five years later, the settlement joined the Morazán Department , which was then still called Gotera Department . In 1908 Jocoro obtained the title Ciudad with over 3,600 inhabitants .
