Joe & Sally

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joe & Sally are the names of two fictional king penguins that were used as advertising media for Austria advertising until the 2007/2008 winter season .

History of origin

The pair of penguins and eleven other “penguin pairs” were created for the 1988 Vienna Festival . The idea, design, sculpting and painting of the penguins come from the object artists anaplus , that is Ana Maria Heigl and Christian Jauernik with the collaboration of the theater sculptor Gerold Kubitschek . The photographer, draftsman, bon vivant and author Willy Puchner took the first photographs together with the artist group anaplus and Anneliese Paulhart. At that time the project was entitled “The Seduction to Pose”. After Willy Puchner's four-year trip around the world, during which the figures were maintained by anaplus , his book Die Sehnsucht der Pinguine was published in 1992 , which was translated into seven languages in 1999. In 2004 a revised (German-language) new edition appeared.

In 2008, Österreich Werbung separated from the Loewe GGK agency, which had run the Joe & Sally campaign.

Press reviews

“When Joe and Sally travel, they are amazed. And often. The two penguins are not surprised, because the world is big and always full of surprises. ... Perhaps they found a lot of things weird, strange and unknown. Foreign countries, foreign customs - so what? That is how they may have thought when they set off. ... The travel and love story of Joe and Sally is meant metaphorically, they are the heroes of vilified mass tourism. Are curious, strange, sometimes in love, sometimes brittle, at least always with something like longing in their hearts that things might be peaceful elsewhere too. People like us. ” Die Zeit , Hamburg.

"The penguins are more than just artificial foreign bodies that convey a new insight into well-known views, they are the intellectual, emotional and artistic conclusion of the photographer and author Willy Puchner." Profil , Vienna.

“Thankfully, the Austrian photographer Willy Puchner entered the lives of Joe and Sally years ago as a fairy godmother. Madame measures five centimeters less than her monsieur, but she has red-painted fingernails as a consolation. Puchner took the two of them to the dream locations of the glossy brochures, and the couple did indeed see a lot ... The special charm of these pictures is due to the couple's power of transformation. His presence gives the postcard views freshness and charm; the familiar, snapped to death, awakens to new life. With the eyes of the penguins Joe and Sally we see what we have long forgotten how to see. ” Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , Frankfurt.

“To parody the behavior of tourists, he photographs them in their unmistakable, stereotypical poses. Willy Puchner goes with the penguins to the places of their longing, which in many respects can also be ours. ” Falter , Vienna.
