Joe Egan (Irish name: Seosamh MacAodhagain) (born October 18, 1946 in Paisley , Scotland ; born Joseph Egan ) is a British singer and songwriter .

Stealers Wheel

In the 1960s Joe Egan played together with his school friend Gerry Rafferty in various smaller British bands, e.g. B. the Sensors or the Mavericks and worked as a session musician. In 1972 he founded the folk / rock band Stealers Wheel with Rafferty . The track Stuck in the Middle with You , which he wrote with Rafferty, became a surprise hit in 1973 after two flopped singles and was able to place in the top ten of the American and British charts .

Rafferty then got out of Stealers Wheel and left Egan the role of band leader. On the two videos of Stuck in the Middle with You , Egan can also be seen miming the parts in which Rafferty clearly sings. Even before the next recordings, Rafferty returned to the band, which meant that all other musicians except Egan dropped out. The second album Ferguslie Park was therefore recorded by Gerry Rafferty and Joe Egan as a duo with accompanying musicians. Two smaller hits were extracted from this, Everyone's Agreed That Everything Will Turn Out Fine , written by both, and Star, composed by Joe Egan alone .

After that, the partnership between the two no longer seemed to work. Sluggish sales and artistic differences led to the dissolution of Stealers Wheel in 1975 before the release of the third album, Right Or Wrong .

The two songwriters went their separate ways from then on. Since both were still tied to complicated contracts , they were initially unable to publish any further recordings for three years.

Solo career

Joe Egan released his first solo album Out Of Nowhere the following year. It received rave reviews, especially in Germany ("best folk rock album of the year", "better than Rafferty's debut album"), but only sold sparingly. The singles Back on the Road and Out of Nowhere could not be placed in the charts either.

In 1981, Joe Egan's second album was released, entitled Map . It was rockier and with the keyboard sound that was modern at the time, but it received hardly any attention and had no commercial success. Since Joe Egan didn't like to be in public anyway, he withdrew and was not heard from for ten years.

In the early 1990s, a stealers wheel reunion was planned for a short time, because Egan visited Rafferty again in Hugh Murphy's studio and also sang on some tracks of On A Wing & A Prayer . 1994 Over My Head was largely composed of compositions by Joe Egan but was sung by Gerry Rafferty. The track Trouble With Love , on which Joe Egan unmistakably contributed the solo part, has remained unpublished to this day.

What Joe Egan is currently doing is not known.
