Joel (Dotawo)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joel was a king of the Christian Nubian kingdom of Dotawo , who ruled around 1485.

Joel is one of the last known Nubian-Christian kings. He appears in a graffito in the cathedral of Faras , in an inscription in the church of Tamit , in a letter from Gebel Adda dated 1484 and in an inscription in an ancient Egyptian temple, later converted into a church, near this place. The relatively high number of surviving inscriptions is remarkable, especially as it dates back to a time shortly before the Christian empires in Nubia disappeared. In any case, Joel seems to have had some meaning and it is reported that he had at least one vassal king under him: King Tienossi of Ilenat .
