Joelle Wallach

Joelle Wallach (born June 29, 1946 in New York City ) is an American composer and music teacher.

Wallach grew up in Morocco . She took piano, bassoon, violin, singing and music theory lessons in the Preparatory Division at the Juilliard School of Music and studied at Sarah Lawrence College , Columbia University and John Corigliano at the Manhattan School of Music . She is visiting professor at the University of North Texas .

In 1980 Wallach won first prize at the Inter-American Music Awards with the choral work On the Beach at Night Alone . Her octet From the Forest of Chimneys was premiered by the New York Philharmonic Ensemble on its tenth anniversary. She composed the oratorio Toward a Time of Renewal for the New York Choral Society . Her ballet Glancing Below premiered in 1994 and was added to the Hartford Ballet repertoire the following year . The chamber opera The King's Twelve Moons has been performed sixteen times in New York. Wallach's String Quartet was nominated in 1997 by the American Composers Alliance for the Pulitzer Prize for Composition.
