Johann Christian Schurries (born August 8, 1700 in Braunschweig ; † August 20, 1762 there ) was a sculptor .

life and work

Johann Christian Schurries belonged to a Braunschweig family of sculptors and was the grandson of the sculptor Wilhelm Schorigus the Elder. J. His older brother Heinrich Julius Schurries (baptized June 30, 1697; † October 26, 1770) was also a sculptor who worked as a shape cutter in the princely calico factory . Another brother, Johann Heinrich Schurries (baptized January 23, 1724 - December 8, 1768), also called himself a sculptor. Neither work is documented.

In 1740 Johann Christian Schurries was commissioned to do the wood carving work for the Prieche in the southern nave of the Martini church . This work was paid for with 5 thalers 18 groschen, while the carpenter Johann Ulrich Staats received 164 thalers 18 marks for his work on the Prieche. Schurries added alabaster to the pulpit and a tomb in the Martini church, for which he was paid 6 thalers and 9 groschen.
