Johann Georg Schaarschmidt

Johann Georg Schaarschmidt (born March 24, 1932 in Hamburg ) is a German conductor, opera director and former rector of the Freiburg University of Music .

Schaarschmidt was born as the son of the businessman Egon Jules Schaarschmidt and his wife Annemarie, geb. Berkhan in Hamburg. After studying Kapellmeister in Freiburg and Darmstadt, he was assistant director and director at the Staatstheater Darmstadt , at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and at the Bayreuth and Salzburg festivals from 1960 to 1970 . In 1970 he received a professorship in drama lessons at the State University for Music and Performing Arts Hamburg . In 1974 he switched to the State University of Music in Freiburg as director of the opera school, where he was rector from 1980 to 1996.

As a director, Schaarschmidt staged numerous opera performances, including in Freiburg, Basel, Berlin and Tokyo. Since 1985 he has been a member of the jury for the Karl Sczuka Prize .

In 2011 he received the “Solar Energy Prize” for his commitment as chairman of the “Freiburg Street School” association, which takes care of young people in difficult life situations. He is also an honorary senator at the University of Music in Freiburg.
