Johann Gottfried Krebs

Johann Gottfried Krebs (baptized May 29, 1741 in Zwickau ; † January 5, 1814 in Altenburg ) was a German cantor , organist and composer .

Life

His father was the Bach student Johann Ludwig Krebs . He spent the first years of his life in the organist's house, Domhof 5 in Zwickau. In 1744 the family moved to Zeitz , where his father became a palace organist. There he went to school and learned to play the organ. In 1756 his father became castle organist in Altenburg. On December 5, 1758, Johann Gottfried Krebs took over the post of "middle organist" in Altenburg. On April 11, 1769, he married Eleonora Sophie Prager in Gößnitz , with whom he had five children. In 1771, Krebs became Altenburger Stadtkantor.

Krebs mainly composed cantatas . These include:
