Johann Haslinger

Johann Haslinger, 1900

Johann Haslinger was an Austrian musician and sculptor from Linz who attracted attention in 1900 with an unusual trip from Vienna to Paris and is now widely mistaken for the handrail record holder . Haslinger bought a two-wheeled cart for his trip, on which he crouched and strapped himself around with his hands, without wearing gloves. He was accompanied by Johann Bauer from Salzburg on a bicycle. In this way, Haslinger covered 1,435 km from Vienna to Paris within 55 days, traveling an average of ten hours a day. He financed his trip by selling postcards and playing a gramophone. Haslinger wasn't the only one who traveled eccentrically to the 1900 World's Fair ; Occasionally such travelers were criticized as "fools" and "idlers".

Haslinger's performance was shown distorted in the Guinness Book of Records , where not only was his name misspelled (“ Johann Hurlinger ”), but also his trip was presented as the best handrail performance. This information has been adopted over the years by numerous authors and media who compare newer handrail performances with "Hurlingers" supposed record.
