Johann Hinrich Meyer (born February 3, 1761 in Teutendorf , † July 26, 1850 in Lübeck ) was a German ship's carpenter.

Live and act

The names of Meyer's parents have not been passed down. What school he attended and what professional training he received is also unknown. From 1795 he built wooden ships on the Lübeck Lastadie . As the first ship he made his masterpiece with the Hukergaleass for the Lübeck skipper Jacob Heitmann. The ship had a carrying capacity of 49 commercial loads of 3 tons each. Thus he was allowed to carry the title of master shipper.

The Lübeck ship's carpenter's office elected Meyer as senior man in 1835. On behalf of the Hamburg resident Ferdinand Laeisz, he built the brig "Carl", named after his son, as the first ship of his own , which could carry 92 cargo loads. He built a total of 54 ships and enlarged 13 more. During the continental blockade and the subsequent French period in Lübeck , shipbuilding and shipping in the city ceased almost completely.

Meyer worked as a ship carpenter until the end of his life. He helped the industry, which had been in decline in Lübeck since the 17th century, to a significant upturn.

family

On November 1, 1791 Meyer married Anna Elsabe, née Franck, in Lübeck. She came from Gneversdorf and died on May 14, 1796 in Lübeck. In his second marriage, he married Catharina Maria Wohlers again on September 25, 1835 in Lübeck (baptized on April 2, 1769 in Lübeck; † May 22, 1835 ibid).

Meyer's first marriage resulted in two sons, including Hans Jacob Albrecht. From the second marriage came two daughters and the son Johann Friedrich (born June 29, 1799 in Lübeck; † September 27, 1830 ibid).

Meyer founded a shipbuilding tradition that lasted almost 100 years. The two sons Hans Jacob Albrecht and Johann Friedrich also worked as ship carpenters. From 1826 to 1830, three family members worked as shipbuilders for two generations. In the 1830s, Johann Hinrich Maier had two shipbuilding sites and Hans Jacob Albrecht three, which they combined in what is now a joint venture. They worked independently on shared facilities.
