Johann I (Aumale)

Johann I († July 11, 1302 at Courtrai ) was a count of Aumale . He was a son of Count Ferdinand II and Laure de Montfort. On his father's side, he came from the royal house of Castile .

When his father died in 1260, Johann succeeded his grandmother Jeanne de Dammartin as Count of Aumale . After their death in 1279 he took over this county in his own right. The county of Ponthieu , also held by his grandmother, passed to his aunt Eleonore , Queen of England.

Johann I fought against the Flemings in the Battle of the Golden Spurs and was killed in the process.

Johann was married to Ida de Meulan and their son was Johann II († 1342).
