Johann IV von Katzenelnbogen († 1444 ) was one of the last counts from the younger line of the von Katzenelnbogen family .

His father was Dieter VIII. , A Count von Katzenelnbogen from the younger line of those von Katzenelnbogen, he predominantly ruled in the Upper County of Katzenelnbogen . His mother was Elisabeth von Nassau-Wiesbaden, a daughter of Adolf I von Nassau-Wiesbaden (1307-1370).

Johann IV married Anna von Katzenelnbogen, a distant cousin from the older line of the family, in 1383 and had at least one son with her, Count Philipp I (1402–1479).

This son, Philip I, remained the last surviving male bearer of the family's name; he had two sons himself, Philipp (1427-1453) and Eberhard (? -1456), but they both died before him and had no male offspring themselves, so that when he died his daughter Anna inherited the estates including Dornberg Castle , whereby everything to the family of her husband, Landgrave Heinrich III. fell from Hessen .

Johann became important for the history of Riesling : in 1435 Klaus Kleinfisch, a manager of Johann, bought a new white grape variety for a count's vineyard in Rüsselsheim for 22 schillings. The name Riesling is mentioned in a document for the first time in this invoice .

Johann died in 1444 at Castle Rheinfels , his body was later to Kloster Eberbach transferred, which since Eberhard I. of Katzenelnbogen the grave lay was the family.
