Adolf I. (Nassau-Wiesbaden-Idstein)
Adolf I (* around 1307 ; † January 17, 1370 in Idstein ) was Count of Nassau and founder of the Nassau-Idstein line .
family
He was a son of Count Gerlach von Nassau and his first wife Agnes von Hessen . One of his brothers was the Archbishop of Mainz Gerlach von Nassau . Other brothers were Johann and Ruprecht .
He himself married Margaretha von Nürnberg († after 1382), a daughter of the Burgrave Friedrich IV of Nürnberg from the house of Zollern . Numerous children resulted from the marriage:
- Gerlach II. (* 1333) was planned as a successor to the father
- Friedrich († 1371), canon in Mainz
- Agnes († 1376) married Count Werner IV von Wittgenstein in their first marriage, and Eberhard I von Eppstein in their second marriage
- Margarethe became abbess at Klarenthal Monastery
- Elisabeth († 1389) married Count Dieter VIII von Katzenelnbogen in 1361 .
- Adolf (1353-1390) was Archbishop of Mainz
- Johann († 1420) was the governor of the Electorate of Mainz in Eichsfeld
- Anna was abbess in Klarenthal
- Walram IV (1354-1393) was the father's successor
- Johann († 1419) was Archbishop of Mainz
- Katharina († 1403) married Reinhard II von Westerburg in 1373
Five other children died young. Count Adolf had an illegitimate son, Johann Adolf von Nassau († 1420). This held various spiritual offices.
Life
His father participated in the rule from around 1338. In 1346, after the abdication of his father in favor of his sons, he took over the rule together with his secular brothers. He pledged his share in Laurenburg in 1346. He also pledged the castle and town of Katzenelnbogen to Count Wilhelm von Katzenelnbogen . Since there was no release, this property was lost. In 1353 he sold the village of Wellmich to Kurtrier .
The brothers divided the inheritance in 1355. Johann I founded the Nassau-Weilburg line , Ruprecht founded the Nassau-Sonnenberg line and Adolf founded the Nassau-Wiesbaden-Idstein line.
Adolf resided mainly in Idstein . There he had the town church expanded and the witch's tower built. In Wiesbaden he promoted weaving. He built Adolfseck Castle , which he gave Kurmainz to fiefdom in 1356. Rich political stand on the part of Charles IV. ,
He was buried in Klarenthal Abbey.
