Johann Jacob Daniel White

Johann Jacob Daniel Weiß or John Weiß (born May 15, 1773 in Rostock , † December 25, 1843 in Brighton ) was a manufacturer of surgical instruments.

Life

Johann Jacob Daniel Weiß was born as the third child of the Rostock cutlery master Georg Bernhard Jacob Weiß and his wife Anna Elisabeth born. Warnkross born. The date of birth is not certain, only the date of baptism May 16, 1773. The mother died four years later, the father in 1803 in poor circumstances. Johann Jacob Daniel Weiß also learned the craft of a cutler. In 1800 he emigrated to England and initially lived in London . He worked there in the company of Georg Berend Jacob Weiß, a distant relative who came from Braunschweig. Here he called himself John Weiß and later took over the management of the company, which now operated under his name. The company manufactured surgical apparatus and devices that Weiß developed. In 1825 he designed a gastric pump that was widely used in the mid-19th century. He patented this development.

Honors

In 1826 Weiß visited his hometown and made a donation to the Rostock council. A valuable set of instruments he produced was given to the Rostock doctors, which could be made available to them on loan. This was the reason to give him honorary citizenship of Rostock on August 25, 1826 .
