Johann Jakob Burckhardt (born May 19, 1614 in Basel ; † November 1, 1690 there ) was a Swiss politician.

Life

Johann Jakob Burckhardt, son of the chief guild master and ethics professor Johann Rudolf Burckhardt, studied law in Basel, Geneva and France. In 1633 he became a clerk in the Basel chancellery. In 1646 he was accepted into the sixth (guild board) of the household guild , which he then also represented in the grand council. In 1657 he was elected to the Small Council and two years later to the Council of Thirteen. 1666–1684 he held the office of chief guild master. From 1684 until his death he was mayor. In 1673 and 1681 he was one of the ambassadors of the Confederation at the reception of the French King Louis XIV.
