Johann Jakob Kress (also Kreß ) (* around 1685 in Walderbach ; † November 6, 1728 in Darmstadt ) was a German composer , violinist and concertmaster .

Life

He was the son of Johann Georg Kress from Walderbach. The family moved to Oettingen when Kress was still young, she is secured there from 1696. In Oettingen Kress attended the Latin school, in addition received a musical education at the expense of Albrecht Ernst Fürst zu Oettingen-Oettingen. Then he got a job in the court orchestra under Kapellmeister Jakob Christian Hertel . From 1712 Kress was a violinist in the court orchestra in Darmstadt. A few years later he was promoted to court concertmaster there. On January 25, 1718, he married Anna Maria Böhler, the daughter of a Darmstadt city councilor. In 1719 the Darmstädter Hof owed 400 florins to Kress, which corresponded to a whole year's salary.

Kress must have had good contacts with Georg Philipp Telemann , since Telemann was the only godfather of his son Georg Philipp Kress (1719–1779) in November 1719 and also from Frankfurt a. M. has traveled to Darmstadt. Contacts must also have existed with Pisendel , since parts of his works can be found in the so-called Schranck No: II collection by Pisendel in Dresden.

Another son Ludwig Albrecht Kress (1718 – after 1740), who was also a musician, is also on record.
