Johann Rieger (painter)
Johann Rieger (* 1655 in Dinkelscherben , † March 3, 1730 in Augsburg ) was a German painter , draftsman and academy director in Augsburg.
Life
As a student of Johann Georg Knappich , Rieger got to know painting and worked for him from 1680 to 1683 as a journeyman. After a long stay in Rome, Rieger received the master's right in Augsburg in 1696 and was the first Catholic director of the newly founded Imperial City Art Academy between 1710 and 1730 . In addition to this office, Rieger also worked for important aristocratic families such as the Fuggers .
Around 1709 he created the altar panel Adoration of the Most Holy Altar Sacrament through the four continents for the parish altar of the Würzburg Cathedral , which, however , burned together with the reredos on March 16, 1945 .
