Johann Schlegelholz

Johann Schlegelholz († 1466 ) was the first Großbailli from 1428 to 1438, and from 1460 to 1464 Grand Prior of the Order of St. John in Germany.

Life and career

Johann Schlegelholz came from a southern German aristocratic family that was probably based in northern Breisgau. In 1427/28 he is documented as commander of the religious houses in Rheinfelden and Mülhausen (today Mulhouse ), a little later as commander of the Johanniterkommende in Rothenburg ob der Tauber , Reichartsroth and Freiburg i.Br.

In 1428 the office of the Großbailli was re-created, it was awarded to the German tongue of the Order of St. John. Johann Schlegelholz was the first to hold this office from 1428. The Großbailli was responsible for the fortifications in Rhodes, and later also in Malta. In 1435 he received the Kommende Heitersheim for this office .

1431 it was founded by Grand Master Antonio Fluvian de la Riviere , the Coming Hohenrain transferred to life, to settle the arrears of pay in the amount of 428 ducats. Johann Schlegelholz appointed Burkard Lupp as administrator, who, however, instead of generating surpluses, ran into debts. In 1435 Johann Schlegelholz appeared in person in Hohenrain, and violent arguments broke out with the administrator and the city of Lucerne. Thereupon the coming one was withdrawn from him again. However, his successor Alexius von Bollingen had to pay him 50 guilders a year for life. But he remained commander in Freiburg and Heitersheim until shortly before 1455.

In 1460, after the death of Johann Loesel, he took over the office of Grand Prior in Germany, which he held until 1464. He probably died in 1466.
