Richard von Buttlar († 23 August 1466), also Richard von Buttlar, called von Neuenberg, was Grand Bailli of the Order of St. John from 1454 to 1464 and Grand Prior of the Order of St. John in Germany from 1464 to 1466 .

Life and career

Richard von Buttlar came from an aristocratic family who named themselves after their ancestral castle Buttlar between Fulda and Eisenach. He belonged to a sideline that was founded around 1370 and named itself after the new seat of Neuenberg (or Neuchâtel?). In 1433 he got his first offices with the Würzburg and Biebelried soldiers, which he held until 1466 - despite challenges from Philipp von Reiffenberg . From 1431 to 1451 he was Bailli of Franconia. In 1450 he is attested as commander of the religious houses in Hemmendorf -Rexingen, Kühndorf and Schleusingen . In 1454 he was appointed Grand Bailli in Rhodes. In this role he oversaw the fortifications of Rhodes. He held this important office until 1464, the year in which he was appointed Grand Prior of Germany. He died on August 23, 1466.
