Johann Theodor Susemihl

Johann Theodor Susemihl (* 1772 in Rainrod ; † after 1847) was a German animal painter , engraver and lithographer who worked in Darmstadt and Paris .

life and work

Susemihl was the younger brother of Johann Conrad Susemihl and a student of Johann Georg Pforr .

From 1789 to 1791 he worked in the art institute of the war council Johann Heinrich Merck in Darmstadt. Between 1800 and 1817 he and his older brother drew and stabbed numerous birds in folio for the "Teutsche Ornithologie". He stayed in France around 1802 because a work signed by him with “Th. Susemihl… le 9. juin 1802 “is dated. In 1805, with the support of Landgrave Ludwig X of Hessen-Darmstadt, he went to Paris, where he worked for the lithographic institute of Johann Andrés . He made numerous natural history drawings in Paris (especially quadrupeds and birds).

Susemihl exhibited animal pictures and still lifes until 1848 .
