The Johanna-Sebus-Gymnasium was one of the three Klever Gymnasiums until it was closed.

It was founded in 1935 as an educational institution for girls and was initially called the municipal lyceum with a women's school . After 1945 it became a “college for girls” with a focus on modern foreign languages, which was maintained until it was closed. In 1963, in addition to the grammar school branch, the women's high school was established , in which girls could acquire the secondary school leaving certificate in a strongly practice-oriented canon of subjects . Both branches were given the common name Johanna-Sebus School in memory of the 17-year-old Johanna Sebus from Brienen in Kleve, during the dam failure of 1809 in the floodsRheins lost her life when she came to help other people.

The Johanna Sebus School was open to new developments and school trials such as the college and the Reformed upper level , in which it already participated in the pilot phases. With the reform of the upper level of the gymnasium and the introduction of the course system in North Rhine-Westphalia , the school became a pure grammar school, which was also opened to boys as part of the cooperation between the Klever grammar schools. Since 1978 boys have been admitted to the fifth grade. Nevertheless, the school continued to attach great importance to the special support of girls and consciously documents this in its name: Johanna-Sebus-Gymnasium. High school for girls and boys . In 2002 it achieved a top reading for Germany of 614 points in the PISA studies , which was well above the German average for grammar schools.

Because of the sharp decline in the number of students in Kleve, the grammar school should no longer accept students from the 2006 school year . In 2010 the last students passed their Abitur at Johanna-Sebus-Gymnasium Kleve. From this point on, all students attended the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium , even if they were still registered at the Johanna-Sebus -Gymnasium . Already at the beginning of the 2009/2010 school year, grades 11 and 12 of the Johanna-Sebus-Gymnasium and the Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium were merged.

At the end of the 2009/2010 school year the Johanna-Sebus-Gymnasium was closed. Since the school year 2012/2013, the secondary school in Kleve has had its main location in the former Johanna-Sebus-Gymnasium.
