Sonja Northing (* 1968 in Kleve , born Derith) is a German non-party politician. In September 2015 she was elected mayor of the city of Kleve. Her term began on October 21, 2015.

Life

Northing graduated from the Johanna-Sebus-Gymnasium in Kleve in 1987 . After joining the city administration of Kleve, she completed a dual course of study , which she completed with a degree in administration . From 1991 to 1995 she was a clerk in the social welfare office in Kleve, from 1995 to 2004 administrative manager at the Volkshochschule Kleve, from 2004 to 2009 general administrative auditor in the audit department . Northing has been Head of Labor and Social Affairs since 2009 .

Northing is married with a stepdaughter.

politics

In 2015 Northing went into the local election campaign as a candidate for the SPD , FDP and the Free Voting Association Offene Klever . She won the mayoral election in 2015 with 64.5% against candidates from the CDU and the Greens . She was the first non-CDU member to be elected to the post of mayor of Kleve after the end of World War II . In the media response, the election result was described as a “landslide victory” (RP) and “sensation” (WDR).
