Johanna Loewenherz (born March 12, 1857 in Rheinbrohl ; † May 16 or 17, 1937 there ) was a German author , women's rights activist and socialist .

Life

Johanna Loewenherz came from a Jewish family. She was the youngest of the three children of Fanny and Heymann Loewenherz, a merchant and quarry owner. Her sister died in 1905, her brother in 1880. On August 24, 1900, she gave birth to her illegitimate son Karl Fritz, who died in 1933, in Cologne.

Loewenherz got involved as a social democratic speaker in the 1890s . She published political writings on women's issues, but also literary works. Prostitution or Production, Property or Marriage appeared in 1895 ? Her epic verse Der Drachenfels appeared anonymously in 1890 . Under the pseudonym L. Vonderwied she wrote the libretto for the opera Das Mädchen vom See , set to music by Otto Klauwell , (premiered in 1889) and the tragedy Gertrud (1892).

After the transfer of power to the National Socialists , Loewenherz was briefly placed in protective custody in 1933 .

The life and work of Johanna Loewenherz are only poorly known and difficult to research because the National Socialists destroyed their estate.

Foundation, endowment

In her will, Johanna Loewenherz bequeathed her fortune “for the best of women who somehow and elsewhere have made a name for themselves in women's affairs.” However, the National Socialist laws did not allow the establishment of the foundation from Jewish assets. In the 1980s, the Neuwied district founded the Johanna Loewenherz Foundation , from which prizes and grants are awarded in their favor, including the Johanna Loewenherz Foundation Prize .
