Johanna Moore

Johanna Doris Moore is a computer scientist who conducts research in the fields of computational linguistics and intelligent systems . Moore has been Professor of Artificial Intelligence at Edinburgh University since 1998 .

Life

After graduating from North Hollywood High School in 1975, Moore studied at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Computer Science in 1980 and a Master of Science in Computer Science in 1982.

For her subsequent doctorate, she received a fellowship from the Office of Naval Research from 1982 to 1985 and was an International Business Machines Fellow from 1985 to 1987 . For the final year of her doctorate, she also received an Affirmative Affairs Dissertation Year Fellowship from UCLA in 1988/89 .

During this time Moore researched together with William Swartout and Cecile Paris on explanations in expert and decision support systems . In December 1989 she received her PhD from UCLA with her thesis A Reactive Approach to Explanation in Expert and Advice-Giving Systems at UCLA. The work was supervised by Gerald Estrin and Margot Flowers .

Moore then worked as a research fellow at the Learning Research and Development Center and Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Intelligent Systems at the University of Pittsburgh . In 1996 she became Associate Professor of Linguistics, Associate Professor of Computer Science and Intelligent Systems, and Director of the Intelligent Systems Program in Pittsburgh .

In 1998 Moore moved to a chair for Artificial Intelligence at the University of Edinburgh and became director of the Human Communication Research Center there .

Moore is a Chartered IT Professional Fellow of the British Computer Society and has been a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh since 2003 .
