The Johannes Dobberstein Medal for services in the veterinary field of the German Democratic Republic was a state award of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which was awarded on September 10, 1987 by the Chairman of the State Council of the GDR Erich Honecker in three stages, bronze , silver and gold was donated. It was named after the veterinary pathologist and national award winner of the GDR Johannes Dobberstein . They were awarded for outstanding achievements in the veterinary field of the GDR. Especially for services to protect animal populations from animal diseases and other dangers. Furthermore, also for the guarantee of the health clearance certificates of food of animal origin as well as for the application of the scientific-technical progress in veterinary medicine, but also for the training of veterinary specialists. The first awards took place during a ceremony on the occasion of the central conference of the veterinary system in the GDR in October 1987.

Award procedure

The award of the medal could only take place once at each level to individuals who were active in the areas of responsibility of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food and the Ministry of Higher Education and Technical Education. As an exception, the loan to other working people was also possible if they were present to support the veterinary service. However, the maximum number of medals that could be awarded each year was limited. So only 30 medals in bronze, 20 medals in silver and only 10 medals in gold could be awarded, whereby the medal levels were handed out together with a certificate and bonus. This premium was 250 marks for the bronze level, 500 for the silver level and 750 for the gold level. The award itself took place in the two lowest levels by the Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Food Industry or by the chairmen of the district councils, for the gold level by the aforementioned minister personally every year on the day of the cooperative farmers and workers of the socialist agricultural and industrialists Forestry (third Sunday in June) or on the day of the working people in the light, food and food industry (third Saturday in October).

Authorization to propose

The proposals, which should lead to the award of the medal, had to be submitted annually by March 1 or July 1 to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food. Authorization to make suggestions was incumbent

  • for all levels of the medal
    • the heads of the combines, VVB and other companies and institutions subordinate to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Management
    • the Minister of Higher and Technical Education
  • for the gold level
    • the chairmen of the district councils
    • the Central Board of the Land, Food and Forestry Union
  • for the bronze and silver levels (compared to the chairman of the district councils)
    • the heads of the combines, companies and establishments of agriculture, forestry and food products subordinate to the councils of the districts
    • the chairman of the district councils
  • the district council of the Land, Food and Forestry union

It goes without saying that the suggestions made had to be made in agreement with the responsible boards or management of the trade unions. Ultimately, however, the decision was made by the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Food in agreement with the Central Executive Committee of the Land, Food and Forest union, or the chairman of the district councils also in agreement with the responsible district councils of the Land, Food and Forest union.

Appearance and wearing style

The medal is round, bronze, silver-plated or gold-plated and has a diameter of 30 mm. On her obverse it shows the portrait of Johannes Dobberstein, looking to the left from the viewer, with his name in a semicircle underneath: JOHANNES DOBERSTEIN .
