John Hyrcanus I.
John Hyrcanus I ( Yohanan Hyrcanus , יוחנן הורקנוס, Ιωάννης Υρκανός) was a Hasmonean ruler who lived in 134 BC. He succeeded Simon , expanded the ruled area significantly and ruled until his death in 104.
John Hyrcanus was the third son of Simon Thassi (also called Simon Maccabeus), who died in February 134 BC. Was murdered at a banquet by his son-in-law Ptolemaeus Abubi together with his two eldest sons Mattathias and Jehudah. John Hyrcanus succeeded his father as ethnarch of Judea and in the office of high priest .
He was the father of Aristobulus I , Alexander Jannäus and Antigonus .
