John II (Pope)
John II († May 8, 535 ) was Pope from January 2, 533 until his death .
Life
His birth name was Mercurius, he was the son of Projectus and was born in Rome . He was the first Pope to change his name after his election, because as Pope he did not want to bear the name of the Roman god Mercurius . Before being elected Pope, he was a priest at the Roman Church of San Clemente . His choice was preceded by lengthy disputes, as his predecessor Boniface II had actually chosen Vigilius as his successor.
In the Liber Pontificalis it is reported that he received a personal creed from the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I , as well as valuable gifts. He stipulated that the election as Pope required the approval of the Ostrogothic king; this right was later transferred to the Eastern Roman emperor .
