Johannes Schencking

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes Schencking (* in the 14th century; † in the 15th century) was canon in Münster .

Life

Johannes Schencking came from the Münster hereditary family Schenckinck. For centuries, the Schenckings and the other patrician families of Münster provided the members of the city council, mayors and city judges. There is no evidence of his genealogical origin, nor of his work. Only in the Stapel archive (U 116) does a document prove that Johannes was canon in Münster on November 7, 1450. This fact is significant, because at that time the custom had developed to give access to an office in the cathedral chapter only to nobles or knights . In a statute from 1392, the cathedral chapter had this practice confirmed by the Pope. This led to a dispute that lasted for centuries and was fought before the Imperial Court of Justice in Speyer . It is thanks to the efforts of the members of the Schencking family, and above all Johann Kerckerinck , that the heirs got their rights and from then on were able to find a place in the cathedral chapter again.
