Johannes Starcke
Johannes Starcke , also Johann Starccius or Johannes Starckius (* around 1542 in Schwerte ; † after 1599) was a German Protestant theologian and writer.
Life
Starcke was ordained in 1570 in Magdeburg Cathedral and around 1572 pastor at St. Stephen's Church in the village of Westerhüsen near Magdeburg . His grandfather was a judge in Bochum , his brother was a pastor in Welsleben . On July 12, 1575, his son Joachim died in Westerhüsen at the age of 2½ years of pleurisy and consumption. A brick clay tombstone reminded of this until the nave was destroyed in 1945. In 1578 he and the entire clergy of the Archbishopric of Magdeburg in Wolmirstedt signed the Book of Concords drawn up in 1577 in Berge Monastery , with which doctrinal disputes were settled.
In 1584 he wrote the text Doxolegia Metrica in Latin , which is considered a hymn of praise for his hometown of Schwerte.
On October 18, 1587, the Sankt-Gertrauden-Kirche in Buckau and the village church in Fermersleben were assigned to him as branch churches for life, although the insinuations ended in 1592. From 1598 and 1599 it is known that he wrote two printed Latin wedding chants. Since he referred to himself as "senior" in the latter work, it is assumed that he was the father of at least one other son at that time. In the last years of his activity he had an assistant preacher available and received an allowance of 50 thalers from the cathedral chapter.
Nothing is known about his further life and death. In particular, it is not clear who took over his pastor and when. The next known pastor in Westerhüsen is Johannes Reumann , who died in office in 1622.
His motto was Fortitudo Dei (German: Bravery in view of God ). In addition, he carried a coat of arms. It has a shield divided into blue and red. A silver pillar with a golden crown rests on a silver square inside that touches both fields. There are two gold stars in the blue field above.
He is certified as having “thorough learning” and “great skill” in the creation of “Latin verses”. A visit in 1583/84 came to the conclusion that he was "well studied" and "faithfully instructed his audience in the catechism."
