John XI. (Pope)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John XI. († 935 in Rome ) was Pope from 931 to 935.

Life

He was made pope by his mother Marozia , who was de facto ruler of Rome at the time, and was dependent on her. According to the historian Liutprand of Cremona , who was loyal to the emperor , he was the son of Pope Sergius III.

John XI. was captured in 932 together with his mother Marozia by their son - and thus his presumed half-brother - Alberich II and died after captivity, probably under house arrest, in 935 in the Lateran. Pope John XI. probably found his tomb in San Giovanni in Laterano (after Pavinio). According to Louis Duchesne , his grave was at the gates of the Lateran Church. A more precise location is not known. His tomb is lost today.
