Johannesbachklamm

The Johannesbachklamm is located in southern Lower Austria near Würflach on the western edge of the Vienna basin . It is today in the midst of the conservation area, Johannis gorge .

The Johannesbachklamm is a good kilometer long and sunk up to 60 m deep into a zone of Wetterstein limestone, which separates the softer Werfen layers further west from the gravel areas of the stone field in the east .

There are two caves in the gorge: the Johannesbachklammhöhle (cave register 1861/7) and the Klammwirthöhle (1861/61).

History and Development

As early as the second half of the 19th century, the path along the Johannesbach was used by miners to reach the now-disused coal mine in Grünbach am Schneeberg from Würflach . But it was not until the beginning of the 20th century that the gorge was made accessible by a climbing system built by Naturefriends . The trail, opened on August 3, 1902, crosses the deeply cut course of the Johannesbach a total of six times on bridges. Due to destruction by storms and floods, the climbing system had to be renewed repeatedly. In 1926 a dam wall was built at the exit of the gorge and the course of the Johannesbach stream regulated through the local area of Würflach.

The Johannesbachklamm is now a popular destination for hikers of all ages.

Every year in the run-up to Christmas there is an Advent market right in the gorge in the great outdoors.
