Johannesburg Convention

The Johannesburg Convention is a definition of fine dust . It was decided at a pneumoconiosis conference that took place in February 1959 in Johannesburg , South Africa . The purpose of the convention was to define a separation function for dust measuring devices that comes close to lung function. It is based on a definition by the British Medical Research Council from 1952.

According to the Johannesburg Convention, fine dust is "a collective of dust that emerges from a separation system whose effect corresponds to the theoretical separation function of a sedimentation separator , which separates particles with an aerodynamic diameter of 5 µm to 50% and 7 µm to 100%". This definition did not mention a sharp separation limit. When comparing respirable fraction , thoracic fraction and respirable fraction is the separation grain diameter of the Johannesburg Convention between the separation grain diameters of respirable and thoracic fraction.

On the basis of the Johannesburg Convention, particulate matter was included in the MAK list in 1971 . With the introduction of the EN 481 standard in 1993, the convention was replaced. However, the EN 481 standard still allows the use of measuring devices that follow the Johannesburg Convention to record the respirable fraction, as these show around 20% higher results.
