The Johannisbrücke is the oldest bridge in Gymnich , a district of Erftstadt . The heritage-protected bridge leads over the Kleine Erft in the castle park of Gymnich Castle . It is named after the bridge saint John of Nepomuk , whose statue is on the northern edge of the bridge.

location

The Johannisbrücke runs as part of the Balkhausener Straße near the Gymnich Castle in the direction of the Kerpener district Balkhausen over the Kleine Erft or Alte Erft and thus connects the housing estate An der Johannisbrücke , which is named after the bridge, with the town center Gymnichs.

History and description

The Johannisbrücke, a baroque arched bridge, was built around 1740 on behalf of the lord of the castle, Theodat Freiherr von und zu Gymnich, on his property. To this day it has an almost life-size stone figure of the bridge saint Johannes von Nepomuk in the middle on the north side , on the south side there is a coat of arms stone with the alliance coat of arms of Gymnich / Frankenstein. The noble family von und zu Gymnich resided in Gymnich Castle until 1825 (the year of death of the last name bearer Johanna Maria Magdalena Felicitas Freiin von und zu Gymnich).

Since the bridge itself is very narrow, it and its figures have been damaged and restored several times over the course of history. The bridge saint fell into the Erft in the early 1980s after an accident, and in 2008 part of the southern half of the bridge was destroyed in a traffic accident. From August to November 2009 the bridge was restored accordingly, the roadway was reinforced with reinforced concrete and paved true to the original, and the Nepomuk figure and the coat of arms stone were restored and repositioned. Since June 2010 there has also been a pedestrian and cyclist bridge parallel to the Johannis Bridge with a few meters distance.
