Johanniskirche

The Johanniskirche Hückeswagen is one of two churches that are owned by the Evangelical Parish in Hückeswagen , Oberbergischer Kreis .

history

The two evangelical communities of the Lutherans and the Reformed united after a long conflict in 1900, although the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III. had asked the Protestant congregations as early as 1817 to form a church union .

While the Reformed began celebrating their services in the Nikolauskirche - the predecessor of today's Pauluskirche - from 1683 onwards , the smaller but also growing Lutheran congregation laid the foundation stone for the Johanniskirche on May 7, 1836. The community owes this mainly to the then incumbent pastor Johann Heinrich Zilles, who had already started planning the building on his own in 1828. The inauguration with a festive service then took place on October 18, 1837 , just a year and a half after the groundbreaking ceremony.

So it came about that the Evangelical Church Congregation had two places of worship available after unification. However, this situation is a heavy financial burden for the Evangelical Church, which is why several attempts were made in the past to sell the Johanniskirche. When the renovation of the Pauluskirche was due in 1971, a first attempt was made, but in order not to let the then abundant financial resources for monument protection expire, it was decided to renovate the Johanniskirche.

After minor renovation work, the fundamental restoration was carried out between 1978 and 1980, in order to make another effort in 1999: When working on the roof, it was noticed that the tower swayed slightly in the wind and structural engineers diagnosed an "acute risk of collapse". Today the church serves funeral services or concerts of church music. The children's church service of the Protestant church community as well as school and youth services of the community are celebrated in the Johanniskirche. In 2009 the community published plans for the construction of a columbarium , and a year later the decision was made to implement it. The renovation was completed in February 2012.
