John Ashworth (* 1870 in Lowerhouse ; † unknown) was an English football player .

Career

Ashworth was already in the 1888/89 season together with his former Lowerhouse teammate Brown member of Burnley's reserve team. In the course of the season he was successful in the first team friendly matches against Bolton Wanderers (final score 2-1) and FC Nelson (6-0) as a goalscorer.

When he made his debut in the Football League on September 14, 1889 as a "second team youngster" presented, he ran in place of the national player Jack Yates on the left wing . Out of a scrum he scored Burnley's goal in the 2-1 defeat at Everton . Nevertheless, he was replaced by Jimmy Crabtree for the following game . In January 1890 he was called up on the occasion of a home game against FC Stoke again in the first team, which had remained without a win in all 14 previous season games 1889/90 . As a replacement for the sick Robert Haresnape , he occupied the right wing this time. He brought his team into the lead with the support of the opposing defender Alf Underwood , but the hit was again not enough to win a point (final score 1: 3). At the end of the season he left Burnley FC.
