Sir John Beaumont, 1st Baronet (* 1583 in Grace Dieu near Thringstone , Leicestershire , † April 1627 ) was an English poet.

Beaumont was the son of the judge Francis Beaumont († 1598) and brother of Francis Beaumont . He attended Oxford University (Broadgates Hall, later Pembroke College) from 1597 and was admitted to the Inner Temple for legal training in 1600. After the death of his older brother Henry in 1605, he took over the family property. As a Catholic he was convicted (for recusancy ) in 1607 and got into trouble again because of it in 1625. After he lived a long retired life, the Duke of Buckingham , with whom he was friends , convinced him to introduce himself at court. Another friend was the Earl of Southampton . On January 31, 1627 the king bestowed on him the hereditary title of Baronet , of Gracedieu, in the Parish of Belton in the County of Leicester. He died a little later in April 1627 and was buried in Westminster Abbey .

He began writing poetry early and anonymously published Metamorphosis of Tobacco in 1602 ( dedicated to his friend Michael Drayton ). His son published some of his poems ( Bosworth Field ... and other poems ) in 1629 , including his most famous Bosworth Field , which is about the Battle of Bosworth , which had been fought near his country residence. His main work ( Crown of Thornes ) has been lost. He wrote in English and Latin and had a penchant for heroic couplets.

His son and heir John was considered one of the most athletic men of his time and died in 1644 during the siege of Gloucester. His son Gervase died as a child, and he processed his grief in a poem that was included in the Oxford Book of English Verse .
