John Behr

John Behr (born October 16, 1966 ) is an Orthodox priest and theologian. He is Professor of Patristics at St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary and has been its Dean since 2007. He is the author of numerous books and articles on patristics.

Career

After completing his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy at Thames Polytechnic in 1987, he studied for a year in Greece. He completed his Masters in Eastern Christian Studies at Oxford in 1991 under Kallistos Ware . He received his PhD in 1995 with the dissertation "Asceticism and Anthropology in Irenaeus and Clement" , which was examined by Rowan Williams , the future Archbishop of Canterbury . In 1997 he did a Masters in Theology at St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary. His master's thesis there "St Irenaeus of Lyons: On the Apostolic Preaching" contains a complete textual criticism of the works of Irenaeus of Lyonsand, like his dissertation, was published as a book. In 2001 he was ordained an Orthodox priest. He has been a visiting lecturer at St. Vladimir's Seminary since 1993, a member of the faculty there since 1995 and a professor since 2001.

John Behr is married and has two sons and a daughter.
